[Dax’s 100 TED Talks #5 – Sally Kohn: Let’s try emotional correctness]

As part of my MAGIC Hundred education and growth goals I’m watching 100 TED talks by December 31st as a means to expose myself to new ideas and perspectives and expand my thinking.

Today I watched this short but powerful presentation by Sally Kohn who was representing an idea that’s very close to my heart.

Her very simple yet life-changingly powerful premise was that political correctness is NOT something that we should strive toward (something I feel VERY strongly about as it tends to make differences taboo and culture homogenised) but rather, that emotionally correctness is ‘where it’s at’.

I love this thinking (and feeling!) because it allows for disagreement and misalignment with the beliefs of others and yet STILL allows for alignment, acceptance, care and connection with the person who has those beliefs.

In the presentation Kohn rightly (in my opinion) says that we don’t even stand a chance of getting people to agree with us if they won’t even LISTEN to us first and that our real challenge is to find the compassion for others that we want them to have for US.

As a coach and educator, I couldn’t agree more.

In fact, the more I’ve studied and practiced effective communication, the more I’ve seen the proof that this is the only truly reliable and replicable way to ensure that communication stays open, clear and ‘clean’.

This video is well worth a watch.

Enjoy!

P.S – What thoughts or feelings did the presentation evoke in YOU?
What will you DO as a result of having watched it?

(Remember, information itself is not powerful, it’s what we DO with it that makes a difference)
